CAT Syllabus

Why this matters

CAT does not publish a single official syllabus document the way a school board exam does. What exists instead is a well-understood pattern of topics that show up year after year, based on actual past papers. Knowing this pattern in advance stops you from either under-preparing a recurring topic or over-preparing something that rarely appears.

What you'll learn

The recurring topic areas within each of CAT's three sections, and a sense of where to prioritize your time.

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

• Arithmetic — percentages, profit and loss, ratios, averages, time-speed-distance, time and work
• Algebra — linear and quadratic equations, functions, inequalities
• Geometry and Mensuration — lines, triangles, circles, areas and volumes
• Number Systems — divisibility, remainders, factors
• Modern Math — permutations and combinations, probability, set theory

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)

• Data Interpretation — tables, graphs, charts, caselets requiring calculation
• Logical Reasoning — arrangements, sequencing, puzzles, blood relations, direction sense

DILR sets are usually presented as linked groups of questions built around one dataset or puzzle, so getting the initial setup right matters more than in most other sections — a wrong initial deduction can cost you an entire set, not just one question.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

• Reading Comprehension — passages from varied domains: economics, science, culture, philosophy
• Verbal Ability — para-jumbles, para-summary, odd sentence out, sentence completion

RC typically carries more weight than standalone Verbal Ability questions, so consistent reading habits built over months matter more here than last-minute grammar revision.

How to use this syllabus practically

Rather than trying to master every topic equally, identify which topics appear most consistently across recent years within each section, and build strength there first. Depth on frequently tested topics outperforms shallow coverage of everything.
