Mangaluru is Karnataka's principal coastal city, combining port history, temples, churches, beaches and a food culture shaped by Tulu, Konkani, Beary and coastal traditions. It is also a useful gateway to Udupi, the Western Ghats and northern Kerala.
What to see
- Kadri Manjunath Temple — a major historic temple in the city.
- St Aloysius Chapel — known for its painted interior; visitor access follows institutional schedules.
- Sultan Battery — a small watchtower site by the Gurupura River.
- Panambur and Tannirbhavi beaches — different access routes and crowd levels; check sea conditions.
- Pilikula Nisargadhama — a larger cultural and nature complex outside the centre.
Planning the visit
Two days cover the city and coast. Mangaluru has an international airport and two main railway stations, so confirm the correct one for each train. October to February is comfortable; monsoon is heavy.
Food
Coastal seafood, neer dosa, ghee roast and regional vegetarian temple cuisine are characteristic. Ask about preparation and spice level rather than treating all "Mangalorean" food as one style.
